Halal Food in Perth: Satay on Charcoal
We were just strolling around Elizabeth Quay in Perth, taking in the sights and sounds of the city, when Fazwan struck up a conversation with a fellow tourist who needed help taking a group photo. It was one of those random moments, that ended up being a great one, because the stranger recommended that we take the ferry across the river to check out the other side. We did just that and it was one of the best spontaneous decisions of this trip!
With the sun shining and the Swan River flowing calmly below, we decided to chill and take in the view at Mill Point Swan River. We snapped some photos and strolled along the water's edge, just enjoying the moment. We were getting a bit peckish, so we thought we'd look for a halal restaurant nearby. And that's when we saw Satay On Charcoal on the map. We were intrigued and decided to give it a try. And man, were we glad we did!

First impression of Satay On Charcoal
My first impression of the restaurant was that it looked like a hole-in-the-wall, hidden and tucked away from the main hustle and bustle of the city. We wouldn't have found it if not for that signage on the main road showing us the way because it's literally located at the back of a hotel! But as we approached, I noticed that it was surprisingly crowded and almost all their seats were filled. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating, so it's best to either come early or be ready to brave the cold if you come during winter or cooler nights.
The Food at Satay On Charcoal
Satay on Charcoal serves up some of the most authentic and delicious Malaysian food in Perth. The menu is simple but effective, with a variety of options to suit every taste. While we waited for a table, I saw locals coming in and out, picking up take-out food. That's when I knew the food must be good. It was clear that this was a favorite and that it had a reputation amongst locals and tourist alike. I couldn't wait to try it out for myself.
As the name suggests, this restaurant is known for its delicious satay, a popular dish that has made its way around the world! It involves skewering various types of meat and marinating it before cooking over charcoal firewood using peanut sauce as an accompanying dip for your satay sticks (the skewers). Over here, their chicken and beef satays are cooked to perfection and served with a fragrant and flavourful satay sauce as well as rice cakes, cucumber, and red onions for dipping.
My family members also ordered one Nasi Goreng each, which is essentially rice cooked in a sweet and spicy sauce, often with fried eggs in the mix. Each of us took different proteins to go along with the Nasi Goreng, such as mixed vegetables, fried chicken, shrimp and beef rendang, making for a truly mouthwatering meal.
Their menu is also filled with a variety of local Malaysian drinks such as Bandung (Rose Syrup with Milk), Teh O Ais (Iced Tea) and Lychee Ais (Iced Lychee) that were served in huge cups that are sure to quench your thirst.
What really sets Satay on Charcoal apart is the quality of the food and service. The satay sticks are cooked to perfection and the flavours are absolutely amazing, you can tell they put love into their food. The owner is lovely and friendly, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. We went there to have a nice dinner in lieu of my brother's birthday and it was definitely one of my favourite meals in Perth.
